Bingo History Facts
In the 1500s Italy was the first country to experience the bingo game. They say it comes from their traditional game Il Giuoco del Lotto d’Italia. Frenchmen had their first taste of the game around the 1700s where it was called Le Lotto.
The design that we now see at bingo online sites and halls had numbers from 1-90 written in boxes. This included 27 squares with three rows and nine columns. A caller would select a number and shout it out to everyone. Players would then cover the number called out and named the winner once they have a horizontal line covered.
North America named bingo “Beano” in the 1920s. The basic rules of the game applied here as well, wooden number tokens would be called out. While Edwin Lowe was traveling the carnival he came across people playing the game. Players would look exciting look at their cards to see if they had the called number. Eventually, they had to fill the line diagonally, horizontally, and vertically.
Edwin Lowe went to New York and created his own version of the game. He used cardboard, number stamp, and dried beans. He invited his friends to play it and bingo continued to be popular even reaching the UK in the 1960s.
