Coronavirus Consequences Continues to Hurt Macau During this Easter

The first three days of the Easter holiday period saw Macau welcome less than 900 tourists. This is due to the measures that were put into place to stop the spread of the potentially-lethal coronavirus pandemic. According to a report, about 810 visitors only crossed the border into Macau between Friday morning and Sunday evening. This is despite the fact that the city is one of the few in the world where gambling venues remain open.

Asian Gaming reported that Macau only welcomed a paltry 260 holidaymakers on Friday, before the figure improved the next day to hit 280. However, the authorized data supposedly showed that 270 visitors only entered the former Portuguese outpost on Sunday to epitomize a 99.8% decrease when compared with last year’s total.

Corona-virus Come-Down

Macau is home to 39 brick and mortar sites, including SJM Holdings Limited’s iconic Casino Grand Lisboan and the equally impressive The Venetian Macao. The city closed every one of these venues for a 15-day period in February to combat the highly-contagious COVID-19 strain while their re-opening came with a variety of mandatory social distancing measures.

Travelling Troubles

Asian Gaming reported that all public transportation that takes place between Macau and Hong Kong will remain suspended. In addition, anyone entering the city from abroad is required to undergo the 14 days in quarantine at a chosen hotel. Although not all of the arrivals from mainland China are required to fulfill an isolation obligation, visits have nevertheless dried up because officials recently instituted such a check on anyone that wishes to shift the other way.
