Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Open to the Public
Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont is no fan of Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods reopening casino resorts to the public on June 1. The state has placed warning signs on roadways closer to the resorts warning gamblers about visiting the properties. Travelers within the vicinity of Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun in Connecticut are passing road signs advising them to avoid big gatherings.
Owned and operated by the Mohegan Tribe and the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation on their sovereign lands, the two Native American groups are not under their federal recognition to abide by the state orders. They didn’t over weekend, first opening to choose guests by invitation only, and today to the public.
“I was not happy about it,” Lamont said this morning on WNPR. “I thought we should have at least waited until late June, like our other neighbour’s.”
While commercial gambling venues remain closed in the neighbouring New York and Massachusetts, Rhode Island’s two facilities are set to reopen on the 8th of June, 2020.
Road Warnings
The relationship between Lamont and the two Connecticut tribes has deteriorated. The governor has lifted his stay-at-home order on the 20th of May, 2020. However, restrictions remain in place. Lamont says indoor meetings should be limited to at least 10 people. Foxwood and Mohegan Sun limit capacity, but will far exceed the governor’s cap on the commercial businesses.
The signs were positioned today, as casinos welcomed back the public. Chairman of the Mashantucket Pequot tribe, Rodney Butler, said more than 1,000 people made their way inside Foxwoods by midday on Monday.
Lamont said the electronic road warnings “are for reminding people of the risk they’re taking. That should be clear to anybody that’s thinking of going to the casino.”
Safety Measures are in Place
Guests and employees are required to always wear face coverings at both Connecticut casinos. Several other health and safety defences are implemented, this includes body temperature checks at entrance points, the social distancing protocols, increased cleaning schedules, and also hand sanitization stations.
