How to Calculate RTP

Now that you somewhat know what return to player percentages are, we figure you will want to know how to calculate it next. In theory, calculating this % is relatively easy. The standard formula for calculating return to player percentages for any given table game is: The sum of money returned to the player divided by the sum of money gambled by the player. Calculating this % for online slot games is slightly more complicated because slot machines don’t indicate how often you can expect to win.

We’ve calculated the estimated RTP percentages for slot games, European and American roulette using very broad methods of calculation. Have a look at the expected percentages for each game below:

  • European roulette: 3%
  • American roulette: 7%
  • Slot Machines: 93 – 99%

For other casino games, calculating the return to player % can be more difficult because that % sometimes depends on the strategy the player uses in the game. Craps, for example, has many betting options and for or each of those options, the RTP can be either good or bad depending on the bet you choose to make. Blackjack, on the other hand, promises an RTP percentage of up to 99% when an effective strategy is used. You must also be skilled enough to know which strategy is most likely to bring you those results.

How Do Online Casinos Use RTP

Online casinos heavily rely on the returns that return to player percentages on games bring to the casino. It is what enables them to make a profit in the first place.

Common Misconceptions About RTP

There are many misconceptions about RTP, especially relating to how that percentage is calculated. Most players believe that the game keeps the memory of how much and how frequently it pays out which implies that the RTP of a game or bet is determined by when last you won or lost.

So, if a game’s RTP is set at 90% for example, some players believe that as the game is played. The software somehow targets that percentage and alternates results to more or less meet that 90% RTP target. However, this is not true. The game has no concept of how much money you put into it, or how much money others before you have put into it. The RTP is a calculated % based on the mathematical model of the game. It is not something that is set, forcing the software to adhere.
